The teams played each other in the national semifinals last year, when Iowa ended the Gamecocks' undefeated season. The Hawkeyes (34-4) have a chance to do it again, and on an even bigger stage.

Iowa is coming off a 71-69 victory over No. 3 UConn in the Final Four on Friday, with star guard Caitlin Clark leading the Hawkeyes to a second consecutive national championship game on 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Senior center Kamilla Cardoso played hero for South Carolina, putting up 22 points and 11 rebounds as the Gamecocks defeated No. 3 NC State 78-59 in their semifinal.

The Gamecocks won both of the previous national title games in which they've played, in 2021 and 2022. They are in search of the 10th perfect season in women's college basketball history, now 37-0 after overcoming NC State in the Final Four.

This is Iowa's first time in the Final Four as a one seed, besting UConn in their most recent matchup, 71-69. Despite being held to only six points in the first half, Caitlin Clark scored 21 points and managed nine rebounds in the win.

Players don’t get to assemble their own rosters, but who they choose to play with is an important part of the recruiting process and transfer portal decisions. The Athletic took it a step further with women’s college basketball players and allowed them to play GM with their teams.

If you could add one player to your roster, who would it be and why?

The obvious answer surely would be Caitlin Clark, right? Yes, but the Iowa star wasn’t a runaway choice. Players thoughtfully considered a variety of factors, including their roster needs and best fits for their teams.

The Athletic surveyed 95 NCAA Tournament players, including 85 from the Sweet 16, about their sport. They dished on coaches, opined about their peers and shared thoughts on weightier topics like draft rules and NIL. Players were granted anonymity to allow them to be candid without fear of repercussions. Some players abstained from certain questions.
